Types Of Poodle Noses

You should keep in mind that there are actually two types of poodle noses. When we picture poodles we always think of them as a curly, friendly, cute dog. Poodles are very well known to have a longer nose.

These days, especially since there is a rise in small dogs, it is not uncommon to see smaller poodles with “teddy bear” style of head.

Designer Style Poodles (Teddy Bear)

  • These poodle types are known to be more of a designer style because of how small and attractive they actually are. Toy and miniature poodles have been around for the same amount of time as the standard poodles. Base on looks, you can see that the toy and miniature version have a furry little innocent face of a teddy bear.
  • One thing for sure is that there have been a rise for smaller, designer dogs. This is why dog breeders take it upon themselves to create a dog with the poodles popularity. This is actually how these cute “teddy bear poodles came to be.
  • People who are fans of a rounder, puppy face might opt for a poodle with this type of nose. The only thing is that these dogs are not purebred poodles.

Poodles With Long, Pointed Snout

  • As we’ve mentioned many times, poodles have been around for ages now, during that period of time they were used for hunting. Their long nose played a very important role during that time since it heightened their sniffing senses, making them the perfect choice for hunters.
  • However, as times goes by and poodles owner realized how easy these dogs were to tame, they eventually turned them into family dogs. If you were to look back in history, you will notice that poodles long nose could be seen in many royal family portraits, making this dog breeds the favorite amongst wealthier people.

Health Problems You Will Most Likely Find In Short Nosed Poodles

Poodles naturally were burned with to work with long nose, but everything actually changed as soon as they begin to crossbreed them with other dogs. After the dogs were bred with poodles, a lot of health problems starts to come into play.

The most popular one you’ll see is the breeding of poodles as designer dogs. Breeders normally mix poodle with other dogs so that they can get a unique face and body. There has been a huge demand for designer dogs which is why there has been an increase in over breeding.

It’s best to keep in mind that dogs with short nose usually has breathing problems and this is due to the fact that their nose and windpipe are shaped differently. So whenever breeders try to mix poodle to have those teddy bear dogs they’re most likely to face these problems.

With that being said, here are some of the more common health issues in crossbred poodles:

Epilepsy

  • If it’s a case where your poodles have epilepsy then they will definitely experience seizures. There are two different types if seizures that you can look towards, one where your dog will experience facial twitching, or a more severe full body spasms.
  • It’s challenging to diagnose epilepsy in dogs not until they have shown the biggest symptom, which is having a seizure. Once you have successfully diagnosed the condition, your poodle can start to take medications to control the disorder.

Osteochondrodysplasic (Dwarfism)

This disorder is not caused by the fact that miniature poodles have shorter nose, this has a lot to do with the fact they are trying to achieve the shorter nose. Base on studies, dwarfism in poodles is said to be a genetic mutation that causes stunted growth and abnormal movements. Poodles with that have dwarfism may find it hard to survive due to the severity of the symptoms.

These symptoms normally include a large head, abnormal bones, underbite with a shorter jaw, shorter bones and front legs that are bowed.

Tracheal Collapse

  • When a dog’s windpipe begins to close in, it can cause a tracheal collapse. The tracheal rings within the windpipe can collapse, restricting the airflow. This is most common for smaller dogs, but especially smaller dogs with shorter noses.
  • Symptoms of this can come in the form of a cough that sounds like honking, unwillingness to exercise, and heavy breathing. Tracheal collapse can be brought on when a dog is overexcited, eating, drinking, smoke, dust, unhealthy weight, and even extreme heat or humidity.

Hip dysplasia

This is a condition that are more common amongst larger dogs, but because poodles are known to be bred a lot, this has become an issue for toy and miniature poodles. If somehow your smaller dog have this condition, then it may due to genetic, as a result of over breeding and inbreeding.

Another thing that cause hip dysplasia is nutritional deficiencies, along with not exercising. Due to the fact that poodles are often bred in poor conditions, these begins to rise amongst the smaller varieties.

If your poodle has hip dysplasia, then you may notice that their hip socket isn’t properly developed. This actually causes the ball and socket joints to not fit together as they should. This is quite painful for dogs, since the joints will be constantly rubbing together instead of performing correctly.

The good news is that there are ways in which you can treat this condition. The most common ways are weight loss and physical therapy. Your veterinarian may even prescribe anti-inflammatory medications which will help your dog while they are going through this situation.

Why Is My Poodle’s Nose Turning Pink?

“Last year my 10-year-old dog’s gums went bright red and the vet was worried about cleaning her teeth. But they did and all went well. Now her nose is turning from brown to pink, her gums are pink not red now, and her lower jaw looks to be going pink.

When To Seek Help From A Vet

Do Poodles Have Dry Noses?

Dry dog noses range from a bit dry to the extremely dry nose condition known as nasal hyperkeratosis. A dry nose is not a severe, deadly condition, but it has to be uncomfortable for your dog AND it looks bad. Who wants to be asked, “What is wrong with your dog’s nose?” at the dog park.

This dryness can be caused by a dry climate, low humidity, illness, medications, stress or breed disposition.

The extreme dry nose, Nasal Hyperkeratosis, is an idiopathic condition (medical speak for don’t have a clue) that causes nose tissue to grow uncontrollably, covering the nose in layers of scabby, skin crust.

How Can You Tell If Your Poodle is Going to Have Long or Short Nose

Just like humans, a good indicator of facial features can be what the parents look like. If your puppy has a purebred mother and father poodle with traditional long noses, then most likely, your puppy will too. It’s really hard to know what kind of noses are in your puppies’ family, although some breeders are able to provide certification of purebred doggie DNA.

But, if your puppy is a crossbreed of a poodle and another dog, it may have a nose that’s typical of the other breed. Which, in some cases, is what people prefer. Hence, the popularity of the teddy bear poodle.

Here’s a list of other dogs that are commonly bred with poodles:

  • Golden Retriever
  • Schnauzer
  • Pekingese
  • Shih Tzu
  • Chihuahua
  • Cocker Spaniel
  • Maltese
  • Labrador
  • Yorkshire Terrier
  • Pomeranian
  • Bichon Frise

If your puppy has a mother or father dog that’s one of these breeds, you can look at their nose to see how it may differ from a poodle’s long nose. But, just like human babies, puppy noses can change as they grow.
